coloring

What is it about a pure whit wall that entices children four and under to color on it?  Do they view it as a blank canvas that is just awaiting their artwork? Or is it a magnetic and irresistible pull that they can’t resist?

Seri was a colorer. Once she drew a full size mural on her bedroom wall.  After some talking and punishment I thought we had broke her of the habit, only to discover a year or so later that she had colored on the inside of her sliding closet door.

Neither Michael nor Isaac were susceptible to this crazy urge to destroy a perfectly clean white wall.

However T.J. has never been able to resist the cry of the wild crayon. As a result, Sariah saw how much fun she was missing out on and decided to become a graffiti artist as well.

So, for the past two years I have tried to keep up with their art using magic eraser and other methods, but like so many of our homes the paint seems to peel off under my efforts. I gave up thinking we would just paint when they were out of this stage.  It has always bothered me, but why cover it when they will just replace their art?  Yesterday I came home to the new art addition above.  This was after receiving a call from Seri that TJ had found red paint……

I am beside myself!  We have tried talking, yelling, discipline… nothing seems to make the drawing not worth it.

So, I am begging for advice.  How do you get them to stop drawing on the walls?  How do you get it off"?  And do you paint over it now or wait till they are 18?

By the way, these pictures make it look a lot milder than it looks in person.

I took pictures because all of these nice older people tell me I am going to miss this stage some day. I needed proof as to why I believe I wont!

LOL! Now you don't have to worry about the bottom half of your house! It's all done and repainted, so fresh and so clean clean! hahahaha....Well at least until Kaden is a toddler!

We have had this same issue! One house of ours, the entire wall down the steps to the basement was covered in crayon. We finally painted over it when we sold the house. It hasn't been as bad in subsequent houses because I have become kind of a super psycho about crayons and markers in general. Only washable markers, and I try to keep anything that can write, hidden when not in use. I also keep a little can of touch up paint, and every few months I will go around and paint over stuff. I think they got tired of watching the stuff they scribbled get painted over, because it has gotten much better. It's a pain, and although I'm sure I will miss it when they are all grown up, for now it drives me nuts!
