Fire Waste Management and manage your own waste

When we lived in Germany Matt would always complain about the phone monopoly T-mobile was. There was no other choice, it was T-mobile or no phone.

When we arrived here the monopolies in question became PSE and Waste Management.  Regardless of whether you like their terms, service, charges, etc…. There is no other choice and you are stuck paying whatever they tell you to pay with little h0pe of change occurring as a result of your suggestions.

Such was the frustration with Waste Management.  I  could only turn in one can per week, regardless if that week had accumulated enough trash or if the can was overflowing.

If the trash in  the can caused the lid to raise they charged an additional 4 bucks.

Pick up was not as reliable as it should have been for the money that was paid and often the cans sat there for quit a few days waiting to see if pickup would even occur.  Not to mention there was no mercy for not having had your can to the curb by the time they pulled up.

They even charged if I was on vacation and had no trash to pick up for a week or two. So,in essence, they always got paid whether they provided the service or not, but I couldn’t re-arrange it to fit my needs, Ie, no trash for two weeks and then a little more the third week, resulting in the same amount, just spread out.

It would be easier to list the number of things they refused to pick up than the things they would pick up…  and bulk items were totally out of question.

Then we got smart and fired the company that was more telling us how to manage our trash while taking our money than providing a service for a fee.  no need for the middle man when we are smart enough to stop playing a game in which we never win.

We did appreciate the cans though, so for 30 bucks a piece we sent them payment for two and now own them.  We recycle more than ever because recycling is free. I just run it down to the recycle drop off center.  All food waste is either composted (along with some waste that is not food), given to the dog or fed to the chickens.  After these steps there is really not a lot of trash left over.  With their being no food items and such the waste doesn’t attract animals so it can sit for quit awhile. We usually end up taking a load once every two or three months for the cost of a little over 17 dollars, and we can trash whatever we want, old grills, couches, other broken furniture, lawn clippings, you name it you can dump it.

Pay less money for a service where we call the shots? Works for me!

So do you just take you trash to the dump now? What does the cost of that end up being? I hate waste management for all the reasons you said. Just not sure I'm willing to take my own trash when we don't own a truck.

We do just drive it down ourselves. My hubby would know for sure, but it runs about 17 something for 250 lbs... We have only gone over that once because we were dumping couches too and then it cost us 24.
Before having the truck we just took all the seats out of the van and covered the inside with a huge blue tarp that we use for camping and then transported it.
