A few of my friends recently have started blogging about their “tips to make life easier”, be it a money-saving tip, something to make house work go smoother, or a tip to help use what you have and stop being a consumer.
So, as I was gleaning and using these tips I started thinking about all the things I have learned over the years. I then had a desire to blog about them, maybe to help someone who would find the info useful, but also because we publish these blogs into books every year and I want to document it for my children. No need for them to learn the hard way if they don’t have to…
So, my first post in my Nuggets of Wisdom section will be about something I encounter on an hourly basis. Diapers. With two still in diapers it is a major part of my life.
Seri was in cloth, mainly because Matt was a PV nothing at the time in the Army and we had NO cash. We received a food order from the church and they asked if we wanted cloth diapers, pins and plastic pants. I thought, heck yeah, if you are offering them I will take them. We didn’t pay water at the time and so it was truly a cost free solution practically. By the time the boys came around we were able to afford diapers.
When I was expecting Tristan I had a desire to go back to cloth, so we did. Now we do use disposable if we are going to be out for quit awhile, or on vacation, and at night. Sariah tends to get infections if we leave her in them all night and Tristan pees through everything no matter what.
The majority of the time they are in old fashioned cloth. We buy the Gerber flat and the prefold. Use a prefold for the outside and a flat folded lengthwise as a liner. Pin it and throw on plastic pants.
I have a garbage can with a lid that they are deposited in and then wash them each night in hot with soap and bleach. We have a dry diaper pail but I know of others who use a wet one where you fill the pail with a solution of bleach and water. You can look online for more info.
We even had fun and spent a day tie-dying the flat diapers. All the kids got a kick out of it.
and honestly aside from all the benefits of cloth, I truly think there is nothing cuter than a little bum in a nice, clean cloth diaper!
